Friends of Monroe Launch Fund for Hanging Rock Tower Reconstruction

May 1, 2025

Monroe County, WV — The Friends of Monroe are calling on the community to help restore a beloved landmark in the region: the Hanging Rock Observatory, located on the Allegheny Trail in Monroe County in the George Washington National Forest.

This treasured site, known for its breathtaking panoramic views and prime raptor migration observation was closed in late 2024 by the US Forest Service over structural concerns. The Monroe County Commission, the Friends of Monroe, the USFS, and the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation are collaborating to plan, fund, and erect a new platform to ensure its continued accessibility for visitors and researchers alike.

Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory Tower

For decades, the Hanging Rock Observatory has provided nature lovers, bird watchers, and scientists a unique vantage point to study the annual migration of golden eagles and other raptors along the Appalachian ridgeline. Originally a fire tower, the observatory was repurposed into a viewing platform and has since become a regional attraction for both locals and tourists seeking to experience one of the most remarkable natural sights in the area.

Recent inspections have revealed structural concerns with the platform and access points, necessitating immediate action to preserve the integrity of the site. Weather exposure and years of wear have taken their toll, and the observatory is now closed. By constructing a new tower, a considerable but worthy effort, this Monroe County asset will continue to enrich future generations’ ability to experience its beauty and scientific significance. Visitors can still enjoy the trail and the day use area while repairs are taking place.

To support restoration efforts, the Friends of Monroe have partnered with the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation to establish a dedicated fund. Donations will directly contribute to repairs, ensuring that Hanging Rock Observatory remains a safe and accessible destination for all who visit. The Monroe County Commission has played an active role in coordinating with the USFS and volunteers to elevate the cause and ensure the Observatory is repaired.
